I've been sitting on these two images for awhile. Partly, because I've been trying to find the right way to articulate the memories or the flashes of visions that the first cowboy image conjured in my head. It was basically one part art history and one part a christian up bringing. I couldn't really decide which was the more powerful memory and in the end I realized it was my 4 years of art history that made me fall deeply in love with the cowboy image as soon as I saw it in our basement several weeks ago.

One of the scenes most frequently depicted in European art is the "Transfiguration of Christ".

TRANSFIGURATION: As Christ's closest disciples watch, God transforms Jesus into a dazzling vision and proclaims him to be his own son.

It was the Christ like gesture of the cowboy on the horse that immediatly made me think about paintings of the Italian Renaissance and the older paintings of the Gothic period. The "Saviour" above came to mind. The two gestures compliment each other well and as it is stated in the scriptures, Christ was to sit at the right had of God and so in the cowboy photo the "Christ-like" figure is to the right hand of the other figure present in the photo. What blows my mind is the fact that the Christ-like figure has a gun pointed at him by the "God-like" figure...as it seems as soon as God proclaimed Christ as his son he was destiné to die shortly after. As natural and as intentional, and as holy as this photo could be in depicting the Transfiguration, it's only a studio shot from about 1910...a couple guys off the street dressing up as cowboys and getting their photo taken, it's as simple and straight forward as that, right?

But really, I suppose it's all about education and experience...because I studied art history and was effected heavily by the imagery of paintings from the Italian Renaissance I'm able to make this correlation. I wonder what other people think of when viewing this cowboy studio photograph?

I used to make things in my small studio in Seattle...I'd spend countless hours cutting small images from books, guide books, old magazines, dictonaries and the like, to paste them together to make odd little books.

Myles found this book I made back in 2006 and sent me a picture of it this morning (above) with the subject title: "you should do more of this".

I think it's time to do it again.

SABER-TOOTH

When I was in kindergarten and we started to learn about dinosaurs, I remember the Saber Tooth Tiger as being the on that I liked the most. I think I liked it because it wasn't a pure dinosaur...it had fur and massive teeth and had the ability to be more sly and cunning then a T-Rex that had a peanut for a brain...and so my obsession with the Saber Tooth began. Tonight I came across this geometrical rendering of the Saber Tooth and I have to say I enjoy it greatly:

Kindergarten was a great time for me, as I sit here writing about the Saber Tooth other memories have suddenly been hitting me. Like on St. Patrick's day, I remember my teacher filling us in on Leprechaun's. She passed around peanuts in their shells and had us hold on to them until all the other children in the class got one. She then had us open the shells to get to the nuts, at this point she had us split open one nut and look at the one side that had the little chunk of extra meat on the upper portion. She told us that this was where leprechaun's lived, that the shape we were looking at was their feet. I believed it and in a small way I still do today.

My teacher ended up dieing of cancer...it was my first experience with death and I had no idea how to deal with it...so I just kept playing and enjoying life...I'm pretty sure my teacher would have preferred it that way. She was awesome and totally loved life and mythology.

Saber Tooth Tigers and Leprechaun's are pretty awesome as well.

Got off the plane today in Austin, TX and was overwhelmed by heat and humidity. It's been nice to be in a t-shirt all day and drink beers until 10pm on an outside patio. As nice as it is, I think living in the sun and warmth year round would wear me out. I'd exist outside far too often to be intrested in films, art, and reading. Portland winters are good for this...they allow rest, focus, knowledge, fires, and hearty drinking.

Speaking of more exposed skin...above (click photo to enlarge) is a great scratch that Ethan acquired this summer, somehow he was able to fall just right to create the eiffel tower. He was showing it off at the soap box derby so I couldn't resist taking a photo of it.

"Grizzly Bear’s last album, Veckatimest, has been on constant rotation over here for a while now but I had somehow missed this Patrick Daughters directed video for “Two Weeks”. It’s been haunting me ever since, I can’t stop watching it. At first it’s seems a little strange, but it’s just so beautifully shot and somehow very fitting for the vibe of this song. I love effects like these (the big eyes, etc) where you can’t really tell what’s going on for a while, it’s so clean and subtle. Warp has a full HD version posted up on Youtube here that really highlights the attention to detail. I love seeing such simple compositions that are so moving. This is all essentially one shot and it’s got me glued to the screen. The rest of Daughters’ videography reads like a who’s who of indie music, with work for bands like The Shins, Feist, Snow Patrol, and Interpol among many others." - ISO50

Got this lovely email a bit back when I was conversing with a friend about some fashion blogs that I follow...Jennafer writes:

"I've decided Jason Schwartzman is a way better model then Coco Rocha and Heidi Klum combined, thought you might like this campaign by one of my favorite menswear brands band of outsiders (and they do a great boy by band of outsiders for chicks), it's kind of cheesy and you could quickly draw parallels with the Marc Jacobs ads by Juergen Teller, but I love the expressiveness and pure quirkiness of Jason and the faded Polaroid colors of the shoot."

Instantly I realized that she knew much more about fashion then I...but these shots of Jason Schwartzman are pretty great. I realized I had to agree with everything she mentioned. I found myself spending several hours gazing at these "polaroids" of Schwartzman and many of the other great shots THE BAND OF OUTSIDERS have produced.

LANDING WITH OUR SHADOW

I try to always get a window seat when I am flying, there's something about having the "birds eye view" that I thoroughly enjoy. It might also be because I'm looking to replicate the cocktail shot that William Eggleston took. But I don't think it exists nowadays, all the elements that make this photograph amazing have changed...the upholstery of the chair, the cocktail glass, the straw, the woman's hand, and the texture on the wall around the window. Really though, I don't think it can be replicated, Eggleston has shot this so perfectly, the colors, the light, the framing, the shadow of the woman's fingers, the light refracting through the liquor creating a lovely fractured pattern on the tray. All these elements and Eggleston's brilliance makes the replication of the this shot impossible. Though I know this, there's still something in me that will always look for this image on every flight I take.

So, instead of a brilliant photograph of a cocktail, I was able to find the shadow of our plane hugging the agricultural fields of Denver. It was pretty amazing to see the shadow move faster as we got closer to the ground and then basically morph into a sharks fin once we hit the tarmac.

I can't help but be intrigued by the clouds as well, so I leave you with a sprinkling of some stellar clouds...I always hope/dream that one day I can walk around and bounce from cloud to cloud on their soft surface.

I'm going black for a bit...disconnecting from this electronic machine to play with more organic objects and create things from hand. I also need a break from this obsessive world of social networking over these waves of zeros and ones...granted I'm not one that has delved into the world of twitter, facebook, or myspace...but I somehow still feel a rather strong longing these days to connect more deeply with those that live within a 20 mile radius of me and even myself for that matter. This cyber world transports me too far away from what is in front of me and where I exist.

You can't observe the wonderful gesture, or the movement of a hand, a facial expression, or the movement of ones hair while you are typing about your fascination of life. There's way too much energy lost in quick typed conversations. I want to be around those gestures more, hear a persons voice undulate and fluctuate while they tell me of a childhood memory, watch the way a person fidgets with the napkin that is placed under their cocktail while talking about an old man they saw walking down the street in downtown singing hymns oblivious to all traffic...

So, in short. I'm disconnecting to reconnect on a more human level with the people I know and will come to know on a physical basis. Plus, after being away from physical books I'm longing to get into a novel or some essays by one of my favorites, John Berger...

When I was in 3rd-5th grade my school would have this strange book/gift/school supply fair every year. It was staged in an empty room and things like rabbits feet on chains, little miniature writing pads, and books like Nancy Drew and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were displayed for buying. Along with these items there was my favorite table...the table of pencils. Though I was mostly in love with drafting pencils at the time, I still loved looking at the freshly designed pencils of the late 80's, you know the marbleized type and whatnot.

Recently I came across this site: Bob Truby's Brand Names Pencils and I have to say I've pretty much been nerding out on this site since. It is soooooo comprehensive it blows my mind...the names of the pencils, the colors, the pressed lettering and typography, the logos, the erasers, the ferrules...man it is all so wonderful and lovely...I dig it so much.

I liked golfing and short hair during this time as well...yeah total nerd.

Dead Man

Last night Dead Man was playing late at a theater in SE for only $3.00...it's pretty hard to not pass up a Jim Jarmusch film anytime...but it's even harder to not pass it up on the big screen for only 3 bucks.

OH...YES...ANOTHER CALIFORNIA POST

Ok, I know that I have been heavily posting about the Rapha Tour of California...but I can't help it as this is what I experienced for 10 days. The story continues and people like Dave Christenson can tell the story better then myself through his gorgeous films.

I'm lucky enough to be back in California and as I type this I am in San Jose. Today we did an amazing ride in the pouring rain and wind. We rode out of Mill Valley to Ross to Fairfax to Lauginitas (home of the beer) to Alpine Lake to the Panoramic Hwy (also known as the Seven Sister or Seven bitches as they are rolling hills that get you out of the saddle on each incline) and then back to Mill Valley for some amazing boutique-y type pizza, beer, a viewing of the TOC Stage 1, and a preview of the new Rapha line.

The ride was magical, mystical, freezing, wet, at one point we were definitely in Ewok territory, it had amazing views of the stormy pacific ocean, and a descent that felt like we were riding on the smoothest glass in the world. It was amazing.

Tomorrow we head to Palo Alto and ride to Santa Cruz to finish at a wine bar, that is literally, 30 ft away from the finish of Stage 2. Should be a fun day of wetness again as the forecast says rain, rain, rain.

RAPHA RIDES THE TOUR OF CALIFORNIA

I've been sharing my little amateur videos and photos from the Rapha TOC trip that I went on about 20 days ago. Well, things are starting to go live on the Rapha site and our first trailer has been beautifully crafted by Dave Christenson. So after photo editing, color correcting and sizing all the still photography from the trip, it feels like I've never left California...and I fly back tomorrow to do some riding in conjunction with Rapha and the actual Tour. Where do I live again?

This trip/project is going to stay with me for awhile as it was a super rich experience. There will be about 6 or 7 more short films that will follow the one below in the next 8 days, as well as ride reports and still photography which you can find here.

WHAT I'M LOOKING AT & READING CURRENTLY

I've been obsessed by war bunkers ever since I saw my first one near Half Moon Bay, CA about 10 years ago. I also was lent the book above about 8 years ago and have been wanting to track it down. Luckily I have a connection in the book world and we were able to find it under the Princeton Architectural Press. So, this lazy Sunday was a good day to digest its contents with a bottle of wine and Jeff Buckley's Grace playing in the background.

Plus, one of my most favorite film scenes takes place near a bunker in Federico Fellini's film 8 1/2...for a clip click here (as a side note the music is amazing in this clip).

IMPROVISATIONAL FINDS, CHILDHOOD MEMORIES & A GIFT

Birds. Birds. Birds.

Something I love dearly on an illustrative level. I expressed this love for birds to Jeremy maybe about a month ago...I forget the context but I remember telling him a story about bald eagles.

I used to live in Pinetop, AZ, which was bordered by Navajo and Apache reservations. My father was the ski school director of Sunrise Ski Area, which at the time was owned by the Navajo tribe...so in order to get to the ski area every weekend we would pass through the reservation.

Just outside of McNary, AZ there was a pond to our left where 4 tall scraggly trees lived. Atop these trees lived 3-4 bald eagles that I eagerly looked forward to seeing every weekend as we passed by in our crystal blue Jeep Cherokee. The eagles were the size of small children, so from a mile away we could see their crisp white heads perched on the dead trees across the pond. I looked so forward to seeing these eagles every weekend...they were magical figures in my life...which I believe had an influence on my current obsession with birds.

So, Jeremy gave me a stamp today (pictured above) that had a bird as its imagery and I couldn't help but fall in love. It brought back this memory of the eagles and memories of my life when I was an avid stamp collector. Childhood memories are amazing!

GATHERING POLLEN OF THE DECEASED

Bees:::::they are found on every continent except Antarctica, they are in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants.

Le Corbusier:::::realized from the very start that a system based upon a 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 rhythm could only lead to monotony. To avoid this deadly sort of mundanety, Le Corbusier felt that a system not of identical units but of related proportions was the answer...

On Jan. 20th while waiting on the side of the road outside Livermore, CA I was taken in by a bee on the asphalt. It was wriggling around atop another, at first I thought they were having a little "fun" then I realized one was dead. I decided to record the bee that was alive, as it seemed it was collecting the pollen off the dead bee. Pretty incredible to watch...

Like Le Corbusier realized, life really does exist off of related portions rather then mundanety. Cheers to that!!

TASTES FROM THE ROAD:::::PART III

In 1999 I was visiting San Francisco and happened upon a retrospective of Bill Viola at the SFMOMA. As a side note, the SFMOMA is one of my favorite West Coast art museums; they curate some of the most interesting shows and their brilliance of layout and hanging is worth the visit as well.

OK, back to Bill Viola. All I needed to do was spend an entire day experiencing Viola's video installations to add him to my list of favorites and fall in love with his work. I remember sitting in on the first video of the retrospective, this piece was the only one set up like a traditional theater - chairs and a screen in front. The film started and all you saw was a barren snow scape and the audio was of a sharp crisp wind blowing. After about 2 minutes you could see a small speck of black slowly bouncing in the distance and in the middle of the screen. Another 3 minutes pass, the speck is getting larger but not by much. Finally, I believe after about 10 minutes, you could barely make out that the speck is a man walking towards the camera, post-holing through the snow. He gets closer and the film gets longer and then it ends with the man still so far in the distance that your curiosity of what he looks likes is not fulfilled.

A brilliant film in my book. So, I couldn't help but think about him while filming Ben, Ryan, Dan, and Cole on this long stretch of road near Annette, CA.

Obsession is a curious thing...sometimes you make a conscious decision to be obsessed with something and sometimes you don't. This short film/video has been hanging around in my thoughts for the past 2 days. In part it is my obsession with human movement, in part it is my obsession with good music, in part it is my obsession with a well edited film, and in part it is my obsession with being unconventional.

I highly suggest hitting the 4 arrows making a square on the play bar to launch this video into full screen, as the quality is excellent and the video deserves it.

Maybe it's the snow that fell again yesterday, or coming off the holidays, or having the sun set at 4:30pm that has me craving it and summer. It's intresting how the brain works, at the tail end of summer it seems I am always looking forward to fall with the crisp change of the light, the autumn smells, sweaters, darker beers, and jeans. Although, when I get into the heart of winter I want it to be summer again...

Anyhow, this video has made my craving for the sun even more intense and it is just a super rad video, Yann Garin is a pure genius in this video. Ahh...if only I could skate.

CONVINCING THE PARENTS

My parents were in town for Christmas. On Christmas day after a drive, on what was the snowiest day Portland has seen, we swung by the Ace Hotel Stumptown for some stimulation. Myles and I tried to get my parents to do a photo-booth session, "Ta!" said my dad while rolling his eyes.

Two days later, we had some drinks at Clyde Common and then we were able to convince them to draw the curtain and have fun for 4 flashes of the camera.

Uni-cicle, Frosty Hands, & the Arctic Blast

3 of us (Daniel, Ira, and myself) decided it might be fun to hop on our cyclocross bikes today and go for a ride in the "ARCTIC BLAST" that's hitting Portland right now. Although, when I showed up at James John Cafe in St. Johns, Ira was on his mountain bike and then Daniel rolled up on his. This was going to be an interesting ride...with me being the loner on my single speed cross bike.

We didn't realize that a normal 1.5 ride would take about 2.5 hours instead...slogging through the snow does not equal fast; but it does equal fun! At rides end Daniel ended up with an epic sized icicle on the end of his brim, while Ira ended up with white shoulders and I ended up with white finger tips.

Yes my head looks huge here for some reason...

I don't claim to understand how to make films, but I do like to record movements on my camera, which makes me want to dabble in creating short little films of my wanderings.

While riding home one summer eve, Myles & I happened to roll by the Franz bread factory. They have 3 large windows that let you observe the massive production room where the bread is made.

I filmed one session of the bread coming out of the oven, cooling off, and then disappearing into blackness...

WHAT I'M ACTUALLY GOOD AT

I've been sitting on this material for awhile...so today I thought it would be a good time to organize it and get it archived in this digital world. Myles and I have been in Portland now for 7 months and just yesterday I got around to "officially" unpacking everything we moved down here with. During which, I found several items that have untouched for probably about 9 years or so. I was extremely happy to come across my older slides of pottery I had made, some slides dating back to 1999. Today, I got the bug to organize and all these images by putting them on my Flickr page.

One project, I collaborated with a fellow named Core Drieth; we executed it in the days prior to the year of 2000. Corey and I made and installed 1000 unfired clay cups that on its most obvious level, was an allusion to the western calender and the turn of the millennium, an event that was arguably significant, socially, if not technologically. As the modern era came to an end we found ourselves and our friends talking about the sense of decay, in our linguistic and moral systems, in our relationships with others and in the destruction of the natural world. The making, installing, offering, and destroying of our unfired terra cotta cups referenced the process of cultural degradation. In a less foreboding way, they also referenced the natural origins of society, and showed how we are all subject to ecological processes.

F is for FINALLY open

Myles' shop Ampersand is finally open! We had a successful opening reception, so successful that it was packed for the 3 hours we were open. Myles and I failed to take pictures, but luckily other people were armed with their cameras. Shena and Ross came down from Seattle and Shena posted a few images of the shop on her blog Bloom and Rot (which I have poached above). I hope to have more images of the opening night and the shop as I had DWP photograph the evening with old fashion film so those images are soon to come.

Ampersand opened with a solid show of Jane Waggoner Deschner's altered photos and the bookcases, shelves, and tables were filled with vintage photography, ephemera, collectible books, as well as a concentrated collection of current photography books.

"I am a bit of a proportion freak," I told Brian V. today. "Whether it be in design, human bodies, a tree, architecture...whatever it maybe; if it has beautiful proportions then I can't help but fall in love. ee cummings, the poet, is man that for me is a perfect "proportionist" of poetry, if there is such a thing. His layout, proportions, language, and sophistication of breaking the rules of grammar and punctuation is amazing. I read his poems and the energy I talk about so often that makes it way to my finger tips is electrified and I can't help but be stimulated and inspired.

"i six nonlectures" is ee cummings autobiography and I have been thinking of this book lately. Partly because the last time I was at my parents house my mom sent me away with images of my childhood and partly because my life has played itself out like a film over the past 2 years and I find myself wanting to document it. I keep revisiting ee cummings book because rather than laying out a chronological documentation of his life, he exposes us to stories, periods, thoughts, and atmospheres...a bit like Federico Fellini does in his film 8 1/2.

So, with the images of my childhood I will start to document the stories of my life.

Thousand Oaks, CA - My Grandparent's House - 1979 - I'm about a year old here.

My grandfather (Papa) was a gardener, golfer, and chorizo egg expert. My grandmother wore nothing but navy blue including her shoes and had brilliant red hair that she curled to perfection every morning. My grandparents slept in separate beds and I stayed in a room that had a closet filled with empty Aunt Jemima glass syrup containers. I remember being spoiled at their house and eating pink waffer cookies and drinking cokes.

When I was about 5 years old I was wheeling my 3 year old sister around in a wheelbarrow in our back yard...I hit a rock with the tire and flipped my sister out of the barrow. She was screaming and bleeding and all I could do was run and get my mom...but couldn't stand blood so I waited in the house until my sister stopped crying.

THE THRILLS OF MY EVERYDAY JOB

A phone call came through yesterday...

"Rapha, this is Carey."
"Yes, hello. I'm So & So from Partizan Films and my boss thoroughly loves Rapha. He is a huge fan!" and so on and so on. We spoke for awhile about possible collaborations and the like, so I was curious and researched their website www.partizan.com and I found a wonderful archive of commercials, short films, etc.

I've been without a tv for 10 years...granted, I'm a film freak, so I have a computer that allows me to get lost in other realities, i.e. films. So, with that said this commercial may be old news to many of you, but very new and intriguing to me. It was crafted by Michel Gondry, which according to the Partizan site he is, "Simply known as the director whose work makes other directors cry."

Another couple film shorts that I totally loved and think are beautiful were crafted by Eric Lerner, Mr. Sunken & Mr. Dreamer.

I also couldn't get enough of the sun today which resulted in a built-in swim suite of sunburn, plus I surfed and I actually got up after my second time and after my 4th I carved a turn...fun times indeed (except for the sunburn of course).

I've been following a few surf blogs these days, partly because I love the beauty of the ocean, the athleticism it takes, the culture that surrounds it, the aesthetics, and the beauty of the boards. I came across Ryan Tatar's blog about 2 months ago and have been rather moved by his photographs.

Also, I just hopped onto his collection of photographs on flickr and was reminded that I'm visiting my parents on Wednesday of next week to take a mini-vacation of surfing and riding bikes with them. It should be a great time...I just wish I looked as sexy and smooth on a surfboard as the people in Ryan Tatar's {official website} photographs...

MUSIC & ITS MEMORY POWER

I decided to stream KEXP last night while I was working late at Rapha. When I lived in Seattle it was a given to always cue the radio to 90.3...but once I moved to Portland I've had a hard time finding the same stimulating radio station. NPR is definitely my go to station as of late and I'd have to say "This American Life" that broadcast Sunday was really exceptional (I listened to it while I was driving to Hood River).

Anyhow, KEXP is great! I had forgotten or just not reminded myself that I would either stream their station through iTunes radio or through their site. So, I decided to hit it up last night like I said...oh my goodness!!! I didn't realize how much I had missed "John in the Morning", even though I thought he was annoying as hell he was super comforting this mornig and of course I always over looked his annoyances for his exceptional taste in music. DJ Riz and Hip Hop on Sunday evenings...man I missed KEXP.

About 2 Weeks ago a friend gave me an album by Dr. Dog and as I was listening to it I asked him if he had ever played a certain song for me before..."No." he answered. In deed he had not played a song for me prior to my listening but I had heard it on KEXP about 2 months ago. I really dug this album so I was happy to have it in my possession. But, it just validates how great KEXP really is in regards to exposing stellar music! I'd have to say that I will be streaming it every day at work now and taking note of new artist that penetrate my emotions. Today it was a new band the Two Gallants (follow this link and listen to the player on the upper part of the page and listen to the song "Seems Like Home To Me" amazing!!) that caught my attention and and old band The Smiths "This Charming Man" that caught me...

ALMOST 90, GRAVEL, & HUCKLEBERRIES

My weekend was filled with a good amount of riding. Granted I ride everyday to and fro work and I put at least a good mountain bike ride in every weekend, but this weekend I wanted it to be strictly road. Saturday I took a long time friend up into the West Hills of Portland for his first taste of climbing and rolling the idyllic pastoral lands of Skyline Blvd. We put in a nice ride with a climb up Saltzman to Rock Creek and then down the double tunnels of fun on Thompson. We shared beers at Roots organic brewing and watched the gold metal soccer match Argentina vs. Nigeria.

The next day I awoke and hopped in my car Hood River bound. I was meeting my friend Greg and another guy named CJ to ride/recon a section of a race we all will be participating in on Sept. 6th. It was a gorgeous day with licks of light feeling a bit like fall and a wind strong enough to keep the kite boarders on the Columbia erect and skidding across the water with stellar speed.

We rode out of Hood River (this link shows pics of Greg's house) to Lost Lakes Loop to Lolo Pass and back to Hood River. It was just under 90 miles at days end and a bunch of that was climbing, including a 7 mile gravel climb that provided amazing views of Mt. Hood, massive scree fields, and alpine flowers. EUCALYPTUS SENSATIONS

Went on a road trip to Santa Cruz, CA for the past 5 days. I followed the Rapha Continental guys in my truck with Brian Vernor (creator of Pure Sweet Hell) our photographer for 2 days of 100+ miles each day. Overall, the Continental guys rode 300+ miles in 3 days - the rides were beautiful and magical...it was great to be along.

On Sunday Vernor and I got to finally ride, rather than follow in the truck, for a 70 mile ride that we (Rapha) hosted along with our dealer Palo Alto Bicycles. I'd have to say it was one of the most fun road rides I have done. For some pictures you can go HERE.

In one of my previous post I spoke about wanting to be an architect when I was a kid. On Sunday I walked into the ACE Hotel Stumptown to get my elixir, before heading out for a magical day on mountain bikes, and as I was waiting in line I noticed two floor plans tattooed on the baristas' right arm. "Morning, what will you be having?" he asked with a gentle smile. "I'll have a triple 8 oz. Americano please...by the way, what house or houses do your floor plans go to?" I asked. He smiled a joyous smile in a way that he was surprised and happy that I knew what the lines on his arm represented. "It's the house I grew up in." he said proudly.

Then I came across the lovely video today "Hear I Dreamt I Was An Architect" Decemberists...yet another architect reference.

I was just reading an essay last night, in Jonathan Franzen's collection of essays "HOW TO BE ALONE", and it spoke about the extinction of the novel in today's contemporary culture. He commented on how everything is so fast and digital today that there is no time for people to sit down and digest a novel; especially if novels are competing against movies, TV, and the Internet.

I have always been one to dismiss television and have been without one for the past 10 years. But, on the flip side I watch films all winter and I spend a lot of time on the Internet. I realized that I haven't sat down with a book for 2 years...I haven't created a handmade card in a year...and I haven't made a handmade book in a year and a half. My excuse, "I've just no time."

Ironically enough after reading this essay last night, a letter arrived in the mail here today at the Rapha office and I was blown away by it. The envelope was beautiful...full of hand scrawled letters, numbers, and ink from what looked like custom stamps in orange reading "Natas Kaupas". The letter was indeed from the 80's skateboard hero Natas Kaupas. Slate had met him over the weekend of the Handmade Bicycle show in Feb. here in Portland.

This little gem of art work was yet another validation that I need to slow down and listen to my heart and creative mind again...

STRUCTURAL SILHOUETTE STUDY

I grew up around blue prints, drafting tables, drafting tools, mechanical pencils, and power tools. To say the least I was a draftsman and builders kid. Ever since I can remember I started writing in precise capitals mimicking the words master bedroom, front elevation, utility, etc. I was completely obsessed with sitting at my dad's drafting table and making up floor plans for polar bears to live in and structures that saber tooth tigers could exist in. After a couple years, the animals went away and I was into creating floors plans for sustainable living, co-op living, etc. I think I was more intrigued by the actual visual proportions of the lines I laid down rather than the reality of my structure actually being sound enough to stand and function. I wanted to be an architect, but as soon as I realized you had to do math I was less interested.

Last night on my ride home from work I stopped to take some images of what looked like an old gas station turned coffee shop, turned abandoned. I ride by this structure everyday and the light of the evening that touched it last night pulled me in and I had to take some snaps. After viewing my images this morning I found that my brain kept wanting to draw lines over the silhouette of the structure...so here is a study of how the lines of the structures silhouette extends into space...

Final night of racing short track on mountain bikes rolled by last night...it was an energetic night of racing, relay runs, and a Polaroid photo booth-esque document of team Revolver/Cascadia (with Myles and I slipping in on the fun).

I have always been intrigued by the bizarre distortions that take place when taking a photograph of a photograph. Especially in this case where I was taking a digital image of an actual film/Polaroid print, Ethan even forgot to remove one of the prints and wound up with a great double exposure.

Over the next year I will be filling my left arm with tattoos that are inspired by illustrations from vintage dictionary's. All the images will tie into my childhood memories. I am extremely excited to fill my arm completely with etched/vintage images (maybe the first 3 are mocked up below).

When I was about 19 the Devil came and gave me a visit...he stood at the bottom of my bed with his arms crossed and just stared at me long and hard. I kept my eyes closed and tried not to peek at the glowing red demon. He moved closer, closer, closer - than he offered me his hand...

This story is true & I came across my Devil 7 years later painted on the side of a building, so I asked my friend to stand next to him so I could pay homage to his visit.

My grandmother lived in one in California...she had an exercise machine that had a platform you stepped onto and then wrapped a belt around your back about the size of a car tire. Once you were situated, you flipped "the switch" and the belt supposedly jiggled your flab off. As a kid, I loved hooking myself up to this contraption and jiggling the hell out of my body and brain. The machine was white and had a blue stripe that followed its belly around.

I took these images while I was on a road trip with two men that were and are very dear to me - I also understood the beauty of Kid A on this trip...

GHOSTS OF THE ST. MARTIN BATHS

Jacob and his wife of Walking Man suggested we hit a mineral bath house in Carson, WA. After a solid 2 days of riding our single speeds and a night of sleeping in tents, a hot relaxing soak sounded lovely.

The Hotel St. Martin sits atop a large cliff that drops to a river below where the magical mineral water we were about to soak in seeps out of the ground. As we approached this 100 plus hotel we felt the immediate presence of something that was out of the "Shining". The baths were divided into a "Women's Bath House" & a "Men's Bath House", so we all split - excited for 50 minutes of pure relaxation.

Everything was was lovely until 5 minutes into the bath and I was steaming. My heart started racing and I had to sit up above the water for at least 10 minutes before I felt comfortable slipping back in. After 25 minutes of what felt like a sit up session in my tub I was lead to a room full of tables where I would receive my "wrap".

"Would you like a tight, medium , or loose wrap?" the young woman asks.
"Which is better for your body?" I ask.
"The tight wrap, it makes you sweat more," she said with a bit of a sly smile.
"Okay, give me the tight one."

Within 2 minutes my mind started racing and my heart did the same...all I could think about was calming my heart down. At one moment I peaked out from under the towel that was laid over my eyes and I didn't recognize my own body it was in a state of mummification. I couldn't move, I couldn't breath, sweat was pouring off my body, and my heart felt like it had made its way up to my ears.

Finally, Danielle escaped from here wrap and helped knock me out of mine and we decided it was enough. After a cold shower we found the boys sitting outside looking as dazed and uncomfortable about the whole ordeal as we were.

We hopped in our cars and pointed our wheels towards Portland.

After Sincline we made our way to Stevenson, WA; home to Walking Man Brewing where Nat's friend Jacob is the head brewer. We satiated our muscles with food, relaxed our bodies with amazing beers, enlightened our minds with great conversations, and let the breeze lick our skin while enjoying the patio. I even did a quasi photo booth session with Myles - must be something about wearing hats that puts me in the mood for photo booth-ing.

A FAVORITE

I haven’t watched a film in a long time; last night we watched one of my favorites, L’ECLISSE, by Michelangelo Antonioni. Vittoria, the woman in the film, reminds me of myself in a way; she has these sudden bursts of emotion & awareness; other times she has lost, inward moments, staring into space, playing life through her head. She also gets distracted by structures and sounds that possess a certain level of beauty in them; like poles knocking in the wind at night, she just stands there ignoring everything but the beauty and the phenomenon of sound and movement. It’s a very lovely film, both in terms of its visual content & control over sound & also the sort of psychological & philosophical questions it raises about love, life, art, beauty, etc.
